Yakisugi on the North Sea

Charred wood lasts longer because it has already burned once. Notes from two years on Hallig Langeneß.

Yakisugi on the North Sea
// Text

We have used Yakisugi since 2019 on at least twelve façades between Hamburg and Copenhagen. In summer 2024 we inspected the Hus Langeneß façade for the first time after two seasons.

Observation one: the charred layer has reduced by about 0.4 mm on the weather side. That is within tolerance; we had assumed 1.2 mm.

Observation two: the knots are darker than the surrounding fibres. This makes the timber more restless, not more uniform. We consider that correct.
