Sauna Horn — Holmen, Copenhagen

// Introduction

A black box where the wood ages slower than the city.

Public sauna pavilion on Holmen pier, built for fourteen people and a single shaft of light. The concept follows one rule: anything not stable in saltwater does not belong in a harbour sauna. Outside, charred radiata pine; inside, an aspen sounding floor; door handle in solid cast brass — cast, not polished.

    The pavilion sits 1.2 m above the waterline on existing 1960s steel piles. We added a CLT shell and oriented the entrance toward the city — not the water.

  2. 02Light slit

    Light slit

    A single 36 × 240 cm opening cut beneath the roof overhang. From inside it frames the water; from outside it becomes a lantern. The frosted glass is 12 mm tempered, backed by a gold-leaf layer for heat control.

    The handle is a custom cast at Bornholm Brass — 1.8 kg, untreated patina. After three seasons a green-black layer has formed; we explicitly do not remove it.
